BIOGRAPHY
Philippe Berry was born in Paris on May 18, 1956. He died on September 5, 2019. He was the son of merchants, the brother of the famous actor Richard Berry, and father to actress Marilou Berry.
An avid consumer of comic books, he envisioned making them his career. In 1974 he enrolled at ESAG, the Penninghen school of drawing, which led to work as a graphic artist for textile firms and later as a model maker and art director in advertising agencies. From 1980-1984 he created film posters and theatre set design. In 1984 he turned to sculpture for his creative expression, guided by the art critic, Bernard Lamarche Vadel.
In 1993 he showed at the FIAC where his sculptures were met with immediate success. Philippe’s body of work explores childhood dreams and fantasies; balloons, teddy bears, Indians and cowboys, snowmen and animals; giving poetic expression to his favourite medium, bronze. Bronze that heralds from antiquity; but transmits the fleeting joys and desires of a child.
Volume and colour come to life in the balance of elephants stacked trunk to trunk, balloons floating atop each other, or butterflies perched on a hippopotamus.
